Hyderabad, Jan 6: GN Umesh (5-61), a relatively inexperienced player, emerged as an unlikely bowling hero for Karnataka as Hyderabad were bowled out for 255 on Day One of the four-day South Zone league match at Gymkhana grounds on Thursday. After skipper Mohammad Azharuddin elected to bat, the hosts made a disastrous start, and were two down by the seventh over. It was left to Azharuddin (43, 79m, 62b, 6×4) and D Vinay Kumar (56, 196m, 152b, 8×4) to do the rescue job.

Brief scores: Hyderabad 255 (Vinay Kumar 56; Umesh 5-61) vs Karnataka 6-0.

Sriram cracks ton: A superb knock of 147 (200b, 23×4, 1×6) by left-hander S Sriram enabled Tamil Nadu pile up 350 for seven on the first day of their four-day South Zone match against Goa at Chennai. At one stage, Tamil Nadu were 39 for three, before Sriram and S Sharath added 154.

AP SPUN OUT: Keralaspinners Bhaskaran Ramprakash (6-68) and KN Ananthapadmanabhan (4-42) dismissed Andhra for a paltry 168 on the opening day of their four-day South Zone match at Kozhikode.

Bengal in super League: Bengal moved into the Super League notching five points by virtue of their 220 runs first innings lead against hosts Bihar on the final day of their East Zone tie at Jamshedpur. Bengal, resuming at 377 for five, piled up 561 runs in reply to Bihar’s 341.

ANGUL: A sparkling knock of 144 (212b, 284m, 22×4, 1×6) by skipper Zakaria Zuffri came to the rescue of visiting Assam, as their four-day East Zone match against Orissa ended in a draw.

Orissa, by virtue of their 119-runs first innings lead, moved into the Super League. Zuffri, who hit 68 in the first innings, was namedman of the match.
