This refers to your investigation ‘Who Called Whom When Gujarat Was Burning’ (IE, November 23). Bravo and well done, Express, for taking the initiative, unlike the Gujarat police, in establishing the motive of the so-called saviours of the religion in the post-Godhra carnage.

Chagani E. Mumbai

Most of your headlines speak of the passiveness of the law enforcement machinery, bias of the Gujarat government, atrocities by Hindu mobs. Never have your investigations focused on what was done in Godhra. Or the ISI-madarasa nexus in Bharuch and Bhavnagar, or havens for terrorists in Godhra.

Jungle Raj

Apropos of your editorial ‘Abduction of Bihar’ (IE, November 22), the
Patna High Court has said more than once that there is ‘‘jungle raj’’ in Bihar.
Your paper exposed the Satyendra Dubey murder case. However, RJD leaders always put the blame on others. In the kidnapping of the two top NHPC officers, RJD leaders saw a conspiracy to malign the state. Whose responsibility is it to see that conspirators do not succeed in their plans?

For the Hindu Right, notions of “individual” and “community” are interchangeable. R.S. Sundershan of the RSS says the arrest of Jayendra Saraswati — an individual mortal — is an insult to the entire Hindu community. It could not have occurred to him, nearly three years ago, that there was something wrong about the butchering of over two thousand similar mortals because some individuals of the same religious community were said to have committed a crime. VHP’s Ashok Singhal adds precision by calling the arrest a direct attack on 80 crore Hindus. But when he speaks of a “large-scale conspiracy” in which he says Sonia Gandhi is involved, he is behind Sudershan, who includes in the dastardly plot not just Jayalalithaa but also George W. Bush. Narendra Modi showed himself to be a fine exponent of the art of pumping people full of resentment over imagined “insults”. We can see now that the Family has no dearth of artists.

Govt at work

The security of the Iraqi people demands that the Iraqi government work for saving them from the foreign terrorists and insurgents. For that, military operations remain the best resort for the government. The continuation of terrorism and the insurgency will lead to the multinational forces remaining in Iraq for longer. It will delay the Iraqis from taking on the responsibility of their own security. The Iraqi government is working now to impose law and security in Falluja so that citizens can return to their houses. The government has also started a new military operation in other cities including Baghdad. There is no humanitarian crisis in Falluja. Iraqi soldiers and MNF are distributing food and other supplies to citizens. Representatives of the Ministry of Health visited Falluja’s hospital for the second time, the medical team visited many areas in the city to assure citizens of good quantities of food and water.
