HYDERABAD, JULY 27: A Mafia leader hailing from Uttar Pradesh and wanted in about 30 criminal cases including murder, extortion and kidnapping, was nabbed in a joint operation by the city and Lucknow task force sleuths at Bowenpally in the city on Monday. A country-made weapon and 17 bullets were recovered from him.

The arrest was announced by city police commissioner S R Sukumara at a press conference here.

According to the commissioner, Mukesh Yadav alias Mukesh, belongs to the dreaded Mohan Don gang of Uttar Pradesh and collected Rs 2 crore ransom from various people in that State. In a bid to escape from the UP police, Mukesh shifted his family to the city two years ago and opened a transport company at Kompally on the city outskirts.

On a tip-off from the UP police, the local task force sleuths formed into two teams and arrested Mukesh while he was returning home. Mukesh opened one round fire from his country-made weapon on the police, but none was injured in the incident. He was overpoweredimmediately. The UP police announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 to those providing information about the whereabouts of Mukesh.

According to the commissioner, Mukesh, along with four others, made a vain attempt to kidnap a businessman at Chiran palace in Jubilee Hills in October 1997. However, they could not succeed and in the confusion they left behind a German-made .25 mm pistol in the businessman’s vehicle.
