The Uttar Pradesh Opposition today backtracked on the no-trust vote against Assembly Speaker Kesari Nath Tripathi.

Explaining their volte face, Leader of Opposition Md Azam Khan said: ‘‘We have no personal enmity with the Speaker. We decided to move the no-confidence motion as we felt that Tripathi had been partisan in giving his nod to the split within the Congress. But now the entire Opposition has decided to withdraw the motion which was to be taken up for a debate tomorrow.’’

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh government has ordered that the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Barabanki district be transferred even as the Opposition alleged that the officials had been “shunted away” as they did not allow rigging during bypolls in Haidergargh, which falls within the district. ‘‘We will give it in writing to the secretary of the Assembly Secretariat,’’ he said.

The fate of the no-confidence motion against the Speaker would have been the deciding factor for the Opposition to move a similar motion against the Mayawati government but the Chief Minister managed to give the impression that she had the numbers.

Once it was obvious that they won’t be able to garner enough support, SP and Congress were apparently looking for an excuse to withdraw the notice. Finally, Rashtriya Kranti Party president Kalyan Singh came to their rescue with a written appeal to review the decision and withdraw the notice.

‘‘I am formally appealing to the SP and the Congress to withdraw their notice which is scheduled to come up for debate in the Assembly on Tuesday. The credentials of the Speaker, Kesri Nath Tripathi, are impeccable and I am sure that he has taken note of the fact that some of his decisions have hurt the Opposition parties greatly. Any debate on the Speaker in the Assembly will only lower the dignity of the office he holds and I hope the SP and the Congress will gracefully withdraw their notices by tomorrow,’’ Kalyan told mediapersons. Asked whether he had consulted leaders of the two parties before issuing the appeal, Kalyan said: ‘‘You can read between the lines.’’

Later, CLP leader Pramod Tiwari said: ‘‘Kalyan Singh is a very senior leader. We see nothing wrong in taking note of his appeal. Kalyan himself has met the Speaker today and got the impression that he might have made a mistake in giving nod to the split in the Congress but his intentions were not bad. This prompted us to change our decision.’’
