Questioning Centre’s ‘deafening silence’ on the Nandigram issue, the BJP said the UPA government should seek an immediate report from the West Bengal Governor over the matter.

The party also flayed the CPM for ‘berating’ Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi’s remarks that Nandigram resembled a ‘war zone’.

“Though the Manmohan Singh government has made frequent comments on Gujarat, it has maintained a deafening silence over Nandigram where poorest of the poor are getting killed,” BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

“The Centre should seek an immediate report from the the Governor on the violence in Nandigram,” he said.

“Leftists are crying hoarse about the situation in Gujarat but in Nandigram massacres of innocent people are continuing for so many months in which goons of the CPM are playing a frontal role,” Prasad said.

On CPM’s reaction to Governor’s remarks, he said, “we strongly condemn the manner in which the CPM has tried to berate the Governor for his objective assessment of the situation in Nandigram.”

On Friday, the Governor said, “Nandigram has become a war zone. No government or society can allow a war zone to exist without immediate and effective action.”
