UPA’s bid to push up liberal reforms thwarted: Karat

Left parties have been able to thwart efforts of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre to push through policies of liberalisation and privatisation, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said on Monday.

“Like the previous BJP-led NDA Ministry, the UPA Government also wanted to continue liberalised economic policies giving more thrust to privatisation. But CPI-M and other Left parties have been able to put up stiff resistance against successful implementation of neo-liberalisation policies by extending outside support to the government,” Karat said.

Although the Left front government in Kerala had taken a series of steps to contain price rise, a positive outcome could be expected only if the Centre streamlined the public distribution system and direct procurement from farmers by reversing the present policy. ENS
