The United States has sought India’s assistance in searching for and recovering the remains of nearly 416 Americans who remained missing in India after World War II.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for pow/Missing Personnel Affairs Jerry D. Jennings held discussions with the Ministries of External Affairs and Defence and other officials in this connection during his two-day visit to New Delhi, the Pentagon said in a statement yesterday.

Outlining the US’ commitment to its worldwide efforts in returning missing servicemen to their families, Jennings asked Indian officials to join American efforts in searching for and recovering remains of soldiers missing in India from flying re-supply missions over “the hump” referring to the Himalayan mountain range.

Stressing on the safety of US teams operating worldwide, the senior us official noted that more than 500 aircraft and 1,200 crew members were still missing in the China-Burma-India theatre of operations during World War II.
