The Lucknow University (LU) administration received a boost today as almost all students living in the hostels vacated their room today. This follows the High Court’s order yesterday directing the officials to ensure that the hostels were vacated by Sunday.
Many of the students have been occupying their hostel rooms for years now. But today, most of the 11 hostels in the campus wore a deserted look.
“Now, we are not alone in our drive to free the hostels from illegal occupants. After the HC directive, we are being ably assisted by the district police and administration. You can see the result for yourself,” said LU Proctor Dr A N Singh, pointing towards the empty Jubilee Hostel.
The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court had pulled up DGP Bua Singh and the Chief Secretary among other officials for not supporting V-C Ram Prakash Singh in his efforts to get rid of illegal inmates. The LU authorities have termed the “self-evacuation” of hostels as their victory over the student leaders. “It’s an open secret that these hostels were being used by several anti-social elements for executing their plans. Bombs, sophisticated weapons and arms were being hidden at these hostels. But now, we can expect the hostels to be freed from anti-social elements,” said a lecturer and provost of a hostel.
