VADODARA, Dec 21: Festoons, lanterns, Santa Claus dolls, carols sung to the strumming guitar and the delicious aroma of freshly baked goodies welcome the spirit of Christmas. All set to greet the season are the city’s bakeries and confectionery shops doling out fresh plum cakes and cookies to a growing crowd of buyers.

Franchisee of both the Italian Bakery and Goodies, B M Amin at Fatehgunj is “keeping a good variety of wares ready for over-the-counter sales” while requesting cutomers placing special orders to do so a day in advance. Says Mohammed Zakir Baqui of Amin, “Plum cakes from the Italian Bakery and Goodies are the hot favourites of the season. We have also received bulk orders varying from15 to 18 kgs of cake each from various churches”.

According to Baqui, Amin sells more than 200 kgs of cake in a period of three days during the season. “The demand has been growing with every passing year. Under normal circumstances, we would deliver an order placed in the morning by evening. But now as the orders are more, we are asking for a day’s time to deliver the wares,” he adds.

At the Cake Shoppe, Fatehgunj, black forest, white forest, marble, plum, walnut and almond cakes figure on the fast-selling list; not to forget the coconut macroons, monty, butterskotch and pista-badam biscuits. Says P S Grover of the Cake Shoppe, “We have not only employed extra staff but also stretched the working hours from 10 am to 10 pm. Kilogram-wise, the cakes’ sale goes into three figures daily.” He adds that of the 30-40 per cent additional quantity of wares sold in the season, 10 per cent were made-to-order. “Starting from a week before Christmas, the season lasts as long as January 15,” he says.

Sugar and Spice, a confectionery shop cum fast food joint at Fatehgunj, is not deterred by the fact that it opened only on Monday. Proving true to its name, the shop promises to tingle the taste buds offering a choice of Moghlai, Chinese, South Indian, Parsi food and delectable desert picks from Goodies. Says proprietor Raj Sinha Roy, “Our Farcha Chicken, a Parsi speciality akin to the Kentucky Fried Chicken, will surely be a hit with the customers. Besides, we’ll have the special roast turkey by Goodies and Christmas sweets such as marzipans, fruit cakes, rum balls, plum cakes and chocolates.” Special Christmas hampers and stockings are also available over the counter here.

At Muffins, Express Hotel, it’s time for mince pies, Christmas stollen, snowballs, plum cake besides the regular pastries and cakes. According to production manager Yazd Umrigar, while a majority buyers preferred icing on their cakes, the demand for traditional Christmas goodies was catching up.

Meanwhile, the Welcomgroup will on Tuesday organise in its lobby, a display cum sale counter stacking plum puddings, tarts, assorted breads. Says Sales Manager, Rajesh Sen, “The sale will go on till the New Year. We have also organised a Christmas carnival on December 24 for children by the poolside.
