NEW DELHI, MARCH 27: After establishing his diplomatic victory, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has set his eyes on putting his own house in order. And as part of this exercise, he has invited the newly appointed head of the RSS, K S Sudarshan over dinner on March 30 at his Race Course residence.

This will be Vajpayee’s first one-to-one meeting with Sudarshan after he took reins of the Sangh Parivar at Nagpur two weeks ago.

The dinner assumes significance as Sudarshan has been known for his strong views on the state of economy and dangers ahead. He has been openly advocating the concept of Swadeshi and opposing rackless liberalisation and globalisation.

Sudarshan sent the first warning bells to the BJP-led government at his first press conference in Nagpur when he suggested that some of the economic advisors be dropped to make way for those close to the Gandhian concet and pro-farmer.

Though Sudarshan later clarified that he had been quoted out of context. But Vajpayee was reportedly up set over what the RSS Chief publicly stated. When Sudarshan landed in the Capital on March 19, he made it clear that Vajpayee was like his elder brother and he would seek his blessings.

This was a signal to Vajpayee that he (Sudarshan) has no intention to rock his boat irrespective of the differences on some of the economic policies. Since Vajpayee was pre-occupied with the visit of the US President Bill Clinton, the meeting between the two could not take place. Now that the US President has fully endorsed India’s stand on cross-border terrorism, it has also made the Sangh leadership realise that Vajpayee’s hands must be strengthened.

The Sangh leadership, it is authoritatively learnt, has decided that Vajpayee government should be given one year’s breather before insisting on on the implementation of the Parivar’s agenda. No state government headed by the BJP leaders should tae any step that could embarrass the Vajpayee government. Even frontal organisations, like the VHP, Swadeshi Jagran Manch etc, would not go beyond a point to put Vajpayee in a difficult situation.

Even Vajpayee has indicated to the Sangh leaders that a lot of time is being sent to keep the 20-odd allies of the National Democratic Alliance in good humour. Therefore, any added problem being created by the frontal organisations of the RSS could only “weaken” him.

It is in this context that the dinner meeting will take place between the Sangh leaders and the Prime Minister.
