PUNE, Jan 27: City chess wizards — Amogh Sarpotdar, Udayan Bapat, Sashikant Kutwal, Sandeep Gohad and Abhay Karnataki — displayed some rare skills as Poona University regained the all-India inter-university chess title after a gap of four years at BITS, Pilani (Rajasthan) recently.

Seeded third in the meet after Madras and Mumbai, Poona upset the apple cart aggregating 22.5 points from the possible 24. Madras finished runners-up with 21.5 points, while Mumbai amassed 19.5 points to be placed for third position.

Apart from this, two Poona university boys — Sashikant Kutwal and Abhay Karnataki — also won individual awards for best score. Sashikant scored full points from the seven rounds beating three FIDE rated players, while Abhay defeated two FIDE rated players to record six points.

Poona University will now be representing India in the World University chess championship scheduled to be held at Singapore in May this year.
