VADODARA, Nov 22: Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal leaders called on Commissioner of Police J Mahapatra and District Collector Anil Mukim on Monday and presented a memorandum demanding immediate action against the culprits involved in Sunday’s violence in Karelibaug.

Leading the delegation, VHP-BD leader Niraj Jain threatened to launch a `Hanuman Chalisa’ recital on the road outside the house which was ransacked if the offenders were not arrested within 12 hours.

However, Jain and his supporters agreed to postpone the agitation by two days when Mahapatra asked them not to do anything that might disturb the communal peace. They accepted his appeal to assist the authorities in keeping communal peace in the city in view of the `barghoda’ procession to be taken out over the next two days.

Mahapatra assured them the police would take all measures to ensure that the culprits were arrested within the next two days, and hoped that the VHP-BD activists would keep the peace.

Talking to Express Newsline, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) I N Patel said that four of the accused in Sunday’s violence and three of those involved in Saturday’s stabbing case had already been arrested, and hoped that the remaining culprits in both the incidents would be nabbed soon. Sunday’s violence, according to the police, was in retaliation to Saturday’s clash between two groups of youths.

Laxmiben, whose house was ransacked, and her son, also accompanied the VHP-BD delegation to the police commissioner and district collector.
