NEW DELHI, JUNE 21: In a bid to step up attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday reconstituted its media cell by appointing a journalist, Manohar Puri, as its in-charge.
Through the cell, the VHP will highlight Sonia’s foreign antecedents, thus, saving the BJP from indulging in mud-slinging, a VHP leader said.
affiliated to the organisation will also launch a mass-contact programme through intensive camping in specific areas, he said.
VHP joint secretary Acharya Giriraj Kishore on Monday stated that his workers would not accept Sonia even if she formally converted to Hinduism. “Can she change her ancestral country or her parentage?” Kishore shot back in reply to a question at a press conference.
In order to fine-tune its strategy, the Parishad has convened a two-day meeting of its Margdarshak Mandal (Steering Committee) at Hardwar from Wednesday. More than 80
are likely to participate in the meeting which among other things would deliberate on emerging political scenario, Kargil conflict, Sonia’s antecedents and VHP’s role in the ensuing general elections, Kishore said.
The Committee meeting would be followed up by a three-day All India Workers Meeting of the VHP at Rishikesh near Hardwar from June 26. “Workers will be educated about the context and background of Kargil conflict so that they can launch a public awareness campaign,” Kishore said indicating that the political benefit from such a campaign would obviously be reaped by its ally, the BJP.
The VHP, in separate letters written to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Defence Minister George Fernandes, has promised to execute whatever function its cadre is asked to perform in view of the Kargil conflagration.
It demanded that the government take a strong step to teach Pakistan a lesson to avoid recurrence of incidents like Kargil.
