WGM Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi (6.5) gave India something to cheer about as she virtually assured of the women’s crown at the ongoing Commonwealth Chess Championship.

As far as race for men’s Commonwealth title is concerned those in contention include Grandmasters Dibyendu Barua (7), Suryashekhar Ganguly (6.5) and Pentlya Harikrishna (6.5).

In the Open category the Vietnamese Grandmaster Nguyen Anh Dung is currently ahead with eight points and seems assured of the title. However, if Barua manages to beat the Vietenamese in the last round, then the Buccholzs system will be applied to declare the winner. Top seed GM Kasimdzhanov Rustom remains joint second with 7 points.

WIM Dronavali Harika (5.5) made Vijayalakshmi’s surge to the top much easier when she squandered a winning position in time pressure to Cyprus GM Vasilio Kotronias (6).
