At least nine people, including two women, were killed and two others injured on Thursday night after angry tribals lynched them at Lango village in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. While the deceased are yet to be identified, they are suspected to be Naxals of the People’s War Group.

The two injured have been admitted to a hospital where the condition of one is critical, DGP R.R. Prasad said. A section of security forces led by SP Arun Oraon has been deployed at Lango, the village 80 km from here. However, no arrest has made in this connection so far. Police had reportedly recovered four rifles, four countrymade guns and four grenades from the site. Though the motive behind the crime is still not known, a report reaching here said 50-60 Hos and Santal tribals from Lango killed PWG men in ‘‘self defence’’.

‘‘The villagers first took five Naxals into custody. Soon, a dozen other Naxals gathered there to rescue them. But before they could fire, the villagers killed them in a group action,’’ said the same report which was neither confirmed nor denied by police.

East Singhbhum DySP M.P. Lakra said: ‘‘Longo and its adjoining villages of Rangamati, Gian and Gudabanda have been infested with PWG ultras since 1995. Since the Naxals are non-tribals, they raised their outfit by recruiting tribal youths. Often, these non-tribal PWG men exploit them. Some of them have also sexually exploited tribal girls.’’
