Plans to introduce food sample testing kits to check adulteration in eatables
After receiving guidelines from the Food and Drug Laboratory, Vadodara, this August, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) now plans to introduce food sample testing kits to check adulteration in eatables.
While VMC officials have said the move is part of an awareness drive, they did not specify whom to contact in case adulteration is detected in food items.
They said citizens will have to follow the procedure of approaching the Food Department if they have any complaints.
VMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner C M Makwana said, “This is a sort of movable laboratory, which will have all the necessary chemicals and equipment to check on the spot, if any food item is adulterated or not.”
He added: “We have received eight kits so far. We will get more of these kits soon and hand them over to officials at the Food Department.”
The sample testing kits can be used in as many as 21 different types of tests.
Makwana said: “Our officials will move with these kits and conduct the tests, but as far as legal aspects are concerned, the samples will have to be sent to the Food and Drug Laboratory.”
He added: “The adulteration might be detected immediately through the kits, but it will take at least 45 days to get the scientific results of the analysis of such adulterated items.”
