In the backdrop of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial remarks on Sohrabuddin Sheikh, former PM V P Singh has come in support of the Congress and condemned Modi’s remark, demanding legal action against him.
Speaking to reporters in the Capital on Friday, Singh condemned Modi for his remarks and said “the remarks will spread hatred and amount to inciting communal tension and posing law and order problem. He should be prosecuted under the CrPC.”
Referring to recent media expose about the complicity of the administration during the 2002 Gujarat riots, Singh said the remarks by Modi were dangerous indications for the people of the state. He added that the people of Gujarat should come together to defeat the BJP in the elections and underlined that the Congress was the only party in Gujarat that can credibly challenge the present rule.
In the backdrop of recent violence in Nandigram, Singh said the same could not be compared with what happened post-Godhra.
He praised the admission by West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee of Nandigram being a “political and administrative failure” and said this was what differentiated West Bengal from Gujarat, which has shied away from accepting its mistakes.
