CHANDIGARH, May 26: A war memorial is being constructed by the Department of Architecture, Punjab, at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Park in Roopnagar to immortalise the memory of war heroes who made the supreme sacrifice.

Chief Architect P. R. Luthra said today that every structure in the park, whether a bridge, water body or a proposed bronze statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, has been conceived as a memorial.

Costing about Rs 20 lakh, the memorial, situated on the banks of the Satluj, has been designed

in red sandstone and white marble, the two colours denoting the sacrifice and purity of those who had laid down their lives.

The circular structure of the memorial has been divided into 12 sections, one each for the 12 Sikh misls (armed militia), with inscriptions on granite stone highlighting the actions of each misl. At the centre of the structure is a mast, symbolising a unifying force. The park is also being developed. Care was taken not to cut a single tree, but to integrate them into the development scheme.
