Warne waves his magic wand

South Africa’s demise was delayed for three hours because of a heavy downpour but Australia wrapped up the innings after the umpires brought the teams back onto the field late in the day.

In a mesmerising performance, Warne took 11 wickets in the match at a cost of 109 runs as Mark Taylor’s side took a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series. Warne’s total now stands on 300 wickets in 63 Tests at an average of 23.56.

Warne, who took five for 75 in South Africa’s first innings total of 287, appeared almost unplayable at times during three devastating spells. Only Kallis, whose century earned South Africa a draw in the first Test in Melbourne last week, showed any application. It was the fourth time Warne has taken 10 wickets in a Test match and his 14th five-wicket innings haul.
