The encouraging comeback from injury made by all-rounder Shane Watson will provide Australia several options in team combination for next month’s World Cup, skipper Ricky Ponting said today.
Watson took 3-60 and scored an unbeaten 46 in his long-awaited return in Queensland’s Pura Cup loss to Western Australia at the Gabba this week.
“We haven’t really sat down and spoken a lot about the complete make-up of the squad for the World Cup,” Ponting was qouted by a report in The Age. “What he (Watson) does give is that flexibility. We know he can bat at the top of the order, in the middle, and at six, seven or eight with his batting skill. We might be able to go in with three quicks and him in certain games. If he plays he gives an opportunity for (spinner Brad) Hogg or (Cameron) White to play,” he said.
Australia’s 15-man World Cup squad is due to be announced by February 13.
