Sydney, October 27 : Australian captain Steve Waugh has been named Wisden Australia’s cricketer of the year.
Waugh is the third recipient of the award established by Australia’s version of the cricketing bible.
Belinda Clark, captain of Australia’s women’s team, won the inaugural award in 1998 and paceman Glenn McGrath was awarded it last year.Editor Gideon Haigh said on Friday that he was impressed with Waugh’s captaincy since taking over from Mark Taylor early last year.
Haigh praised Waugh’s efforts in moulding the Australian Test team into arguably one of the best combinations in the modern cricketing era.“This season they have a chance to challenge the existing record of the West Indies of 11 consecutive victories back in 1984,” Haigh said.
Fixing report on Monday
NEW DELHI: CBI would submit its interim report on match-fixing in cricket, which names five Indian players and a cricket official, to the Government on Monday, agency sources said on Friday.
The final go-ahead to the submission of the report was given by CBI Director RK Raghavan before leaving for Athens (Greece) to attend the 69th Interpol Conference, they said.
Warne comeback
MELBOURNE: Shane Warne has set his sights on returning for the Boxing Day Test after confirming he will miss at least the first three Tests against the West Indies here this summer with a fractured finger.
Australia’s all-time leading wicket-taker fractured the ring finger on his right hand, his spinning finger, taking a catch at first slip to dismiss New South Wales Test batsman Mark Waugh in the Sheffield Shield on Thursday.
