WCD Ministry mulling legal action against cops in Aarushi case

The WCD Ministry is contemplating legal action against cops for the manner in which they portrayed the victim.

Not satisfied with the transfer of three Uttar Pradesh police officers by the Mayawati government in the Aarushi murder case, the Union Women and Child Development Ministry is contemplating legal action against them for the manner in which they portrayed the victim.

Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury also rubbished allegations of politicking on the issue by the UP Chief Minister, saying it was regretful.

“I don’t think it is sufficient. I don’t think it is action at all. Transferring the officers involved in the case, I don’t deem it as action at all,” Chowdhury told reporters here.

The Minister was briefing reporters after a meeting with child rights experts, NGOs and lawyers to discuss the legal options available with the ministry to act against the police officers.

She said the ministry’s prime concern was that the personnel who are in public domain should be sensitised to the needs of children.

“All children who are caught in conflict with law should be treated with extra care and sensitivity. We expect that personnel such as police are supposed to have undergone this kind of training. So we are outraged and horrified to see the loose talk that has resulted even before an investigation has been concluded. That is a violation of the law in itself,” Chowdhury said.

Remarking that the police officials had no business giving “personal character certificates” to the dead girl, she said: “I am examining all legal instruments at our disposal and how best to proceed. We are looking at it (taking legal action against the police officials).”
