Senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran today said that his faction will not wait till December 1 for a solution to the crisis in the Congress’ Kerala unit but will continue its fight till A.K. Antony quits as Chief Minister.

Karunakaran told reporters at Trivarna, the ‘I’ group’s office in Kochi, that the group was not ready for a truce till December 1. ‘‘There is no governance in the state. People are fed up. This government has to demit office at the earliest,’’ he said.

Later, Karunakaran inspected the Marine Drive grounds where the group will celebrate Indira Gandhi Jayanti on Wednesday. ‘‘There won’t be any major announcements,’’ a senior party member said.

The ‘I’ faction is expecting more than three lakh workers for the rally. ‘‘We will ensure that all conditions (laid down) in the high court directive are met. Workers will move in two lines and traffic will not be obstructed,’’ P.P. Thankachan said.

Despite the affidavit given by the party, the rally is sure to throw city life out of gear.

‘‘Marine Drive can hold only around 50,000 people. The rest will have to be accommodated on the road. This will affect the smooth flow of traffic,’’ a police official said. However, Karunakaran’s followers are upbeat about the rally.

On the Trivarna premises, a huge poster of Karunakaran with KPCC president Muraleedharan and Indira Gandhi in the background welcomes you.

‘‘The crisis in the Congress is bound to affect the law and order situation if the AICC delays in hammering out a solution,’’ KPCC president Muraleedharan told The Indian Express. ‘‘I had warned of this crisis. A solution has to be found before December 1,’’ he said.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, November17

Leadership change in the Congress-led UDF government in Kerala has been ruled out at least for the time-being, with the UDF constituents agreeing to adopt a wait-and-watch policy till December.

IUML all-India secretary E. Ahmed, who met leaders of the UDF constituents on Sunday, said all had agreed to honour AICC president Sonia Gandhi’s request to wait till December to resolve the problems in the Kerala unit. ‘‘The high command says it is busy with the elections. It has no time to intervene in the crisis here,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the LDF today launched the second phase of its agitation, demanding the removal of Speaker Vakkom Purushothaman and Antony’s resignation with a rally here. CPI leader P.K. Vasudevan Nair said the LDF did not want to topple the government but ‘‘it is not our duty to support a worthless government’’.
