Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi is convinced the suspension of off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has given a strong message to players that they could not hope to go scot-free by committing acts of indiscipline.
“IPL is not just another tournament. It is a very serious tournament. By banning Harbhajan for 11 matches, the committee has sent a strong message down the line that misbehaviour won’t be tolerated,” Modi, who is also IPL chairman, said in Kolkata.
Modi, who flew here during the day to watch the IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, felt that the punishment would have a sobering effect on Harbhajan. “I believe that Harbhajan has learnt his lesson. He will behave,” Modi said.
The BCCI vice-president asserted that the IPL had set an example by coming down hard on the Mumbai Indians player, who had slapped Kings XI Punjab’s S Sreesanth after the Mumbai team lost the IPL outing last Friday.
“Our players are a motivated lot and they are aggressive. It’s a very good sign that the players are treating this tournament as a very serious affair. But you have got to control your aggression. Harbhajan crossed the line the other night.”
