In last three years, over 1,700 doctors working at state government-run hospitals in Gujarat have quit jobs and gone abroad, breaking the bond signed with the state government and paying penalty for the same.
“1,707 government doctors have gone abroad from Gujarat in last three years, from whom Rs 1,149 lakh have been recovered for breaching the bond with the government,” Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas today told the state Assembly.
Vyas stated this in a written reply to the question asked by the Congress MLA Babubhai Shah.
The trend is noteworthy,as the state government is facing flak from various quarters for not being able to fill the 40 per cent vacant posts of MBBS doctors, and 60 per cent vacant posts of doctors with PG qualification,or super-speciality degrees,at government hospitals.
According to Vyas,544 government doctors went overseas in 2008,560 in 2009 and 603 in 2010.
“There has not been much increase in the number of doctors breaking the bonds and going overseas every year,” Vyas said.
