The probe into the murder of CPM rebel leader T P Chandrasekharan has gone further up in the CPM structure, with police on Thursday arresting party Kozhikode district committee member and Onchiyam area secretary C H Ashokan.
Ashokan was the former state general secretary of party-affiliated Kerala Non-Gazetted Officers Union, the largest government employees organisation in Kerala. Onchiyam area committee member K K Krishnan was also arrested, taking the number of CPM men allegedly involved in the case to six.
Police said both had taken part in the conspiracy to murder Chandrasekharan. Ashokan reportedly had a clear idea about the plot and was hence slapped with section 118 of the IPC (concealing the design to commit an offence). Another arrested leader K C Ramachandran had reportedly confessed Ashokans role in the plot.
Senior party leaders rushed to the office of Kozhikode SP,but could not prevent Ashokans arrest. Later,a local court remanded him in police custody. Ashokan was a powerful trade union leader during the last LDF government.
