School Children in Indian cities bank more on Internet search engine Google to gather information than on print or television media, according to findings of a survey conducted by software services and consultancy major Tata Consultancy Services.
According to the survey, most students rely on Google (41 per cent) as compared to print (26 per cent) or television (25 per cent).
The survey was conducted in 12 cities, with a sample size of 14,000 students from English-medium schools aged between 12 and 18. The objective of the survey was to decipher the minds of the young generation, their preferences and habits. Nearly one out of 10 people on the planet are aged under 25 and living in India. That is the significance of Indias next generation and what they think and aspire will hold insights for all those who aim to engage with this Web 2.0 generation, said S Ramadorai,CEO & MD,TCS.
The survey threw in some surprises on social networking trends among the schoolchildren. Bangalore has been termed the blogging capital of India with 66 per cent students blogging regularly against the national average of 39 per cent.
Overall 93 per cent of the respondents were aware of social networking, with Orkut emerging as the most preferred source for social networking. Interestingly,Mumbai is the only Indian city where rival Facebook is more popular.
The next generation has been defined as globetrotters by the survey. They are inclined to go abroad (USA & UK) for their higher studies. The survey has termed them as gadgetphiles defined by the gadgets they own.
