The worlds first Snapdragon processor and new Android 1.6 OS give the Liquid some serious flow and depth
What is in a name? Nothing much, you might say, especially if you have seen a solid phone being called Liquid. Well, that means you havent had the opportunity to see the Acer Liquid all fired up. Because once on there is no other phone around which is more fluid than this Android offering from the worlds third largest computer maker.
This smartphone is the worlds first based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and Android 1.6 or Donut OS,enough to set it apart from the rest. And it is the Android that gives the Liquid its cutting edge with the ease-of-use factor and access to the ever-expanding world of apps on Googles Android Market.
The first thing that will strike you about the phone is the 3.5″ high definition capacitive touchscreen. There is a lot of real estate on this one,and you can add more stuff to the homescreen by adding the apps and widgets you need to access most. For the rest, you just have to swipe in the app menu from the bottom of the screen; this is where you feel the fluidity of the Adroid the most.
The dialer too works well, though you will need real sharp finger to type a message in the vertical format. Users like me,however, will have to go horizontal to make sure you type P and not O. This is a compromise you have to make with most touchscreen phones. But I did find that the touchscreen needs a bit of prodding to get going at times, despite the ultra fast Snapdragon. Then there are homescreen, zoom, back and menu switches at the bottom to make life a bit simpler.
But what the large screen does give you is excellent quality display for multimedia content. In fact, you will enjoy watching movies on this one if you are stuck in traffic. The sound reproduction is also excellent, making this a good option for entertainment junkies. But the phone also has DataViz Roadsync and Documents to Go pre-installed,making it a great business phone too.
Since the screen keeps going to sleep to save power, the LED indicators on top inform you of battery life and new messages. However,I found it a bit odd that I had to press the power button to bring the screen back to life. There are dedicated camera and volume keys on the sides. The 5mp camera has geo-tagging and editing features linked.
If something will put this phone ahead of the competition it would have to be the highspeed Internet connectivity. It took me all of 15 seconds to see Rahul Mahajans wedding show pop up on the YouTube site after I clicked the widget on the homescreen this will be a real monster when 3G finally comes home. Surfing the Internet is also a lot easier when all you have to do is run your fingers through the searches. Once you have logged on to your Google account, accessing your e-mail is also a one-touch function. In fact, all of Google feels so much at home here.
Acer has even provided some exclusive apps like Spinlets, which gives free streaming of worldwide music and video, and Urfooz which creates your very own virtual avatar. The phone also integrates all you social networking identities with real-time updates.
Despite being loaded with features, the phone weighs just 135 g. The memory is expandable up to 32 GB. The Acer Liquid cost Rs 24,900 with a 2 GB micro SD.
