Uttar Pradesh will soon have another trial of political stren-gth,though at a much smaller scale,when by-elections are held for 10 Assembly seats. Seven MLAs have been elected to the Lok Sabha while three seats are already vaccant.

A Lok Sabha by-election will also be held when SP’s Akhilesh Yadav quits one of the two seats he holds — Kannauj and Ferozabad. Sources said Akhilesh is likely to resign from Ferozabad from where Rajvir Singh,national general secretary of the SP and son of former BJP chief minister Kalyan Singh,is likely to contest.

The most prominent winner among the MLAs is SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav,who has been elected from Mainpuri. In the Assembly,he represents Bharthana in Etawah district.

Party sources said the SP chief will resign from the Assembly soon. His brother Shiv Pal Singh Yadav,MLA from Jaswant Nagar,is likely to take over as the Leader of Opposition. Another SP MLA,Mithlesh,has been elected to the Lok Sabha from Shahjahanpur. He represents Powayan in the Assembly.

Two Congress MLAs have also been elected to Lok Sabha. While Pradeep Aditya Jain,MLA from Jhansi, won the election from Jhansi Lok Sabha constituency,R P N Singh,MLA from Padrauna, won from Kushinagar.

BJP is likely to field Ashutosh Tandon,son of from Lucknow west seat,which was vaccated after his father Lalji Tandon’s election to Lok Sabha.

In the BSP camp,Dhananjay Singh,MLA from Rari,has won from Jaunpur Lok Sabha constituency while Kadir Rana,an RLD MLA,won from Muzaffarnagar on a BSP ticket.

Gauri Shankar,SP MLA from Malihabad,and Rajive Channa,BJP MLA from Moradabad West,had also resigned their seats before contesting for Lok Sabha. Both lost.

SP MLA from Bidhauna Dhani Ram Verma had resigned when his son Mahesh Verma was fielded by the BSP from Kannauj. Mahesh Verma too has lost.
