Ahmedabad: Constable shoots self at police headquarters

A police constable on witness protection duty at Naroda Patiya allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle at the police headquarters. The constable was reportedly denied leave for the last six months

A police constable on witness protection duty at Naroda Patiya allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle at the police headquarters here on Sunday. The constable was reportedly denied leave for the last six months.

The deceased,Kanu Raman Baria (40),was posted at the Ahmedabad Police Headquarters,Shahibaug. He was part of F5 company,also called the force company meant for bandobast and emergency security arrangements.

Police said Baria fired four rounds in the air before shooting the fifth one in the neck from his .303 bore rifle.

Police headquarters officials said Baria was deployed on witness protection programme on Saturday. Earlier,he was posted on guard duty at the residences of IPS officers. The Madhavpura police,which is investigating the incident,said they are yet to ascertain the reason behind his extreme step.

Barias colleagues,however,told police that he was disturbed over his seniors attitude towards him,they added.
