The University Grants Commission (UGC) has suspended Dr Manju Singh,Joint Secretary in the Commission, following the CBIs probe into the AICTE corruption racket. The CBI had recommended a major penalty against her.
It is learnt that the suspension orders were issued following the UGC meeting earlier this week when a resolution was passed demanding action against her.
The CBI had filed cases against her under Section 420 of the IPC and various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
In 2009,the CBI had swooped down on the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) while investigating a corruption racket. The entire top brass of AICTE including its Chairman R A Yadav,Advisor Prof Harish Rai and Member Secretary Dr K Narain Rao were put in the dock by the CBI after raids across the country.
The investigation led to UGC and searches were conducted at the office and residence of Dr Manju Singh who was earlier associated with the AICTE.
An FIR was registered against Singh, who was posted on deputation at AICTEs Bangalore office as Regional Officer. She was repatriated to UGC only a few months before the CBI raid. A case had been lodged against her after complaints by an engineering college in Karnataka, sources said.
