Amnesty turns down Roshan Jamal plea

Under arrest in Spain for over a year now on terrorism charges,Indian citizen Roshan Jamal Khan’s plea for help on ground of human rights has been rejected by international human rights watchdog Amnesty International. Amnesty International has written to Khan’s wife Farida, who lives in Mumbai, expressing its sympathies but also its inability to intervene in the case as they feel there is no human right violation involved.

“At present, however, there is no manner in which Amnesty International can intervene in this case as there is no indication — as far as we are aware — that his human rights have been violated. The actions undertaken by the police and legal services appear to be legitimate. You will understand that people are arrested in Spain everyday on suspicion of crimes — which they may or may not be guilty of — and it is necessary to let the judicial system run its course… sorry there is nothing further we can do at present, but do keep us informed of any developments in the case and we will continue to monitor the situation,” an official from Amnesty International communicated to Farida, responding to her plea made with them in mid-2008.

Meanwhile, nothing substantive has come out of Roshan Jamal Khan’s brother Mehboob Khan’s efforts to ask the National Human Rights Commission for help.

“The NHRC just communicated to us that they have forwarded the matter to the Ministry for External Affairs. That’s about it. Amnesty has also said they feel there is no case for intervention,so it is quite disappointing,” Mehboob Khan, who recently started a blog on the plight of his brother with contributions from Roshan’s eldest son Talha Khan, told The Indian Express.
