Anna may call meet on Lokpal strategy

Answering questions about the rift in his team,Hazare said in Bangalore: “You will see that we will fight unitedly.”

Even as the preparatory committee for the IAC’s political party is yet to begin business, social activist Anna Hazare may call a meeting of his former aides and some “concerned citizens” by the end of this month to decide on the future of the Lokpal movement.

Hazare had unilaterally disbanded the IAC core committee on August 6,leading to speculation that he may have done so to distance himself from the political party which he had himself announced at Jantar Mantar.

Answering questions about the rift in his team,Hazare said in Bangalore: “You will see that we will fight unitedly.” While making it clear that he would not be a part of “any political party” Hazare said that he would ‘very soon’ convene a meeting of prominent individuals working for social causes, and after deliberation decide on a future strategy for the anti-graft movement.

“Taking up only the Lokpal issue is not enough to eradicate corruption. There’s a need for a complete change of system. You would know in a couple of months,” said Hazare speaking to reporters at Pune airport after his return from Bangalore. “I won’t form a political party. To contest an election one needs around twenty hundred crore rupees. Where would this money come from? There are several other issues. I would not contest election. I’ll not support any political party,” he added.

He also expressed concern over frequent disruption of Parliament. “Crores of rupees from public exchequer is being wasted due to Parliament logjam. Parliament should be allowed to function,” said Anna.

Former Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hegde, who met Hazare during his stay at the Jindal Naturecure Institute in Bangalore, said on Monday: “Annaji will call a meeting at the end of this month to discuss the future of the movement. The meeting will include the old people (the now disbanded core committee of India Against Corruption) and some new people as well. That is where the future of the movement will be decided.” The meeting,he said, would also sort out the debate on whether the movement should turn political.

There is no news yet of the constitution of the committee that was to decide the contours of Arvind Kejriwal’s political party and it has already missed its first meeting date. There are high hopes of Hazare’s intervention in the ongoing feud between Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi on the move to target BJP for corruption.
