Another grenade attack in Valley, five injured

While two of the injured were discharged after first aid,the remaining three are reported to be in a critical condition.

A day after a series of attacks targeted security personnel in Srinagar and south Kashmir, five civilians were injured when some unidentified men lobbed a grenade in the main market area of Bijbehara town in Anantnag on Wednesday.

While two of the injured were discharged after first aid,the remaining three are reported to be in a critical condition. The incident occurred at around 1:30 pm.

“There was no intended target,” said a senior police officer. “There were no policemen, paramilitary forces or Army personnel in the area when the grenade was hurled,” he added. No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the latest attack.

Today’s attack comes a day after multiple attacks injured three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and a policeman in Srinagar and Anantnag.

The attacks have generated a lot of heat at a time when the Omar Abdullah government is talking of withdrawing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from parts of Jammu and Kashmir. National Conference spokesman Mustafa Kamal had yesterday accused the Army of carrying out the attacks to stall revocation of AFSPA. He had, however, later denied his statement.

“His statement does not even deserve one bit of the Army’s comment,” General Officer Commanding (GoC) 15 Corps Lt Gen Atta Hasnain said. “It is absolutely preposterous.”

Meanwhile, the police said they had arrested two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants from Sopore in north Kashmir, and claimed to have recovered two hand grenades from them. The duo — Bilal Ahmad Mir and Javid Ahmad Mir — were arrested by a joint team of the police and Army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles during a surprise check in Sopore.
