Claiming that Defence Minister A K Antonys reply to a question pertaining to the date of birth of Army Chief General V K Singh in the Rajya Sabha was incorrect and not based on facts, senior Samajwadi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Mohan Singh has written to the minister, saying he should either amend his reply or face a breach of privilege motion for misleading Parliament on the issue.
The date of birth of Gen V K Singh has been maintained as May 10,1950 at the time of his selection as Corps Commander in 2006 as well as his subsequent promotions as Army Commander in 2008 and Chief of the Army Staff in 2010, Antony had said in his written reply to a question by Singh in the Rajya Sabha.
However,Singh has objected to the reply, saying he had sought information regarding General V K Singhs date of birth in his earlier promotions and the date of birth recorded in his service book.
What has been his (General Singh) date of birth in his earlier promotions? What is his date of birth as per AG Branch records? Will you please mention the date of birth as recorded by the AG Branch which is supposed to be the real custodian under the Army Regulations for Service Record of all Army Personnel? asks Singh in his letter written on September 9,suggesting that after seeing all those documents which are preserved in the custody of AG Branch, you can give statement of correction of your answer before Parliament. I have not met the Army Chief, nor I have been contacted by him, Singh told The Indian Express, adding that he would move a breach of privilege motion if the Defence Minister did not correct his reply.
