Differences between the two Gandhi mother-son pairs faded into the background as new members took the oath in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Debutant Varun Gandhi (BJP,Pilibhit) greeted his aunt Sonia Gandhi with folded hands before taking oath. Sonia responded with a broad smile. Varuns mother Maneka Gandhi thumped the desk along with Congress members on the other side when the Secretary-General called out the name of Rahul Gandhi for taking the oath.
Rahul,who got the loudest applause,chose to solemnly affirm in English. Varun swore in the name of God in Hindi. After the oath,Rahul halted in front of Leader of Opposition L K Advani to accept his greetings.
Priyanka,accompanied by her husband Robert Vadra,watched the proceedings from the Speakers gallery and left immediately after Rahul took the oath. Former actress Sangeeta Bijlani could be seen in the visitors’ gallery to see her husband Mohammad Azharuddin take oath.
