Patna: The BJP said it would play the role of “a good Opposition” in Tamil Nadu and Kerala,would emerge as “a strong alternative” in West Bengal,and had contested the elections in Assam with a view to forming the government there. “The West Bengal result will be astonishing,” BJP spokesperson Syed Shahnawaj Hussain said. “We contested the Assam poll to form our government there.”

Kolkata: The Left Front alleged that Manish Gupta,Trinamool Congress candidate against Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee,is influencing Jadavpur’s voters by using his former bureaucratic position and demanded that the Election Commission take action. Gupta is introducing himself to voters as an ex-DM of South 24-Parganas district,where Jadavpur is located,CPM leader Biman Bose said. “He is now merely a candidate with the Trinamool Congress symbol. He is not a leader of the Trinamool Congress. He is trying to use his previous official position to influence voters. We want the Election Commission to look into it and take action,” Bose said.

Pranab talks peace in Maoist domain

Purulia: Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee urged Maoists to shun violence and sit for talks to settle their demands. “All their demands can be met through dialogue,” he said at election rallies at Barabazar and Santhaldihi. Holding the ruling CPM responsible for the rise of Maoists in West Bengal,Mukherjee said the Left Front has done nothing for the development of tribal areas despite getting Central funds.

Big two trade charges in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: The AIADMK had petitioned the Election Commission accusing the ruling DMK of destroying files in the guise of shifting departments to the new secretariat building. A day later,the DMK charged the AIADMK with trying to gain publicity and urged the EC to take action. “Since the office of the EC must have been closed yesterday… it is clear AIADMK has released the complaint to the press even before the EC received it,only going to show that the complaint is purely for publicity,” the DMK said in a statement.
