Bangalore cops stop Google from clicking city

Bangalore police have stopped Google’s camera-mounted cars from roaming the city collecting 360-degree images of roads and public locations for its free Street View service.

Bangalore police have stopped Google’s camera-mounted cars from roaming the city collecting 360-degree images of roads and public locations for its free Street View service. Google confirmed it’s halted image gathering following a letter from Bangalore’s police chief until it has “had a chance to answer any questions or concerns the police have.”

Bangalore is a highly (terror) targeted, sensitive city making security concerns paramount, said Suneel Kumar,Additional Commissioner,Law & Order. “Google can’t take pictures of entries, exits and structures of defence, scientific and even government buildings until they have clearance from the Home and Defence ministries,” he said.

Street View,a popular feature on Google Maps,is available for about 100 cities in 27 countries. Google started collecting images in Bangalore a month ago and its plan was to slowly expand to cover all of India.

Street View first head-butted authorities in several countries for capturing compromising pictures of people including those leaving a strip club and women sunbathing. Following complaints,Google started blurring faces and car license plates.
