Several senior leaders including PCC chief Nand Kumar Patel, former Union minister V C Shukla and former leader of opposition Mahendra Karma were killed in the Maoist attack on May 25 when the party convoy was returning from Sukma after holding a rally of Parivartan Yatra.

The Congress claimed the police had information about the possibility of an attack on the Congress rally but still road opening party was not deployed along Darbha stretch.

In fact, two days before on May 23 a similar Congress convoy crossed through equally Maoist-hit areas of Bijapur and Bhairamgadh and adequate security arrangements were made. The party said the information of the attack had reached nearby police stations but forces were still not sent.
