Malayalam film Kutty Srank,directed by Shaji Karun and with Mamooty as the lead actor,swept the 57th National Film Awards for 2009 with the Best Feature Film,Best Screenplay,Best Costume Designer,Best Cinematography and the Special Jury Awards.
The awards were announced on Wednesday by the Directorate of Film Festivals. Amitabh Bachchan bagged the award for the Best Actor for his portrayal of a teenager suffering from Progeria in the film Paa while the Best Actress award went to Ananya Chatterjee for her performance in the Bengali film Abohoman.
Bachchan has earlier been conferred the national film award for his performance in Black,Agneepath and Saat Hindustani. Hindi film 3 Idiots won the award for Best Popular Film. The Best Hindi Film award went to Paa. Kaminey shared the Special Jury award with Kutty Srank and Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja. While Arundhati Naag won the Best Supporting Actress award for Paa,Farooq Shaikh bagged the Best Supporting Actor award for Lahore.
Lahore,directed by Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan,has been awarded the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a director while the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration has gone to Rakesh Om Prakash Mehras Delhi 6.
Shyam Bengals Well Done Abba bagged the award for Best Film on Social Issues. Rituparno Ghoshs Abohoman won the Best Direction award. Jeeva and Anba Karasu bagged the Best Child Artist award for their performance in the Tamil film Pasanga.
Amit Trivedis music in Anurag Kashyaps Dev D and Ilyarajas musical score for the film Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja won them the Best Music Direction award. Rupam Ismal was named the Best Male Playback Singer for his renditions in the Bengali film MahanagerKolkata and Neelanjana Sarkar bagged the Best Female Playback Singer award for her performance in the Hindi film Housefull. Swanand Kirkires lyrics that made the 3 Idiots song Behti Hawa sa… highly popular won him the Best Lyrics award. Christine Tinseley and Dominie Tills impressive make-up skills in Paa won the duo the Best Make-Up Artist award.
The Best Non-Feature Film award was shared by The Postman and Bilal. The Best Debut Non-Feature Film award went to Kaushal Ozas Vaishnav Jan Toh; Best Environment Film went to Anirban Duttas In for Motion. K Puttaswamys Cinemaa Yaana (Kannada) won the Best Book on Cinema award.
