Harassed,UP man kills self

LUCKNOW: Alleging harassment by a sub-divisional magistrate and a revenue clerk,Ved Prakash Pandey alias Guddu,32,immolated himself outside the residence of the District Magistrate in UPs Gonda district on Monday. A suicide note recovered from Guddu said that he had deposited Rs 1.45 lakh against the loan amount taken by his father,but Sadar SDM Brij Behari Pandey and clerk Brahmanand Tiwari did not enter the amount in the records and also refused to give a receipt,leading to the arrest of his father on Sunday.

CWG: OC officials custody extended

NEW DELHI: A CBI court on Monday extended till April 11 the judicial custody of Organising Committee official K Udai Kumar Reddy and Praveen Bakshi,director of a private firm,who were arrested on February 22 for alleged involvement in a case related to the CWG. Reddy is accused of taking bribe to grant contracts at exorbitant rates to Bakshi.

Gujarat: Abandoned boat found

Surat: Police have found an abandoned boat on the shores of Arabian Sea near Katpore village in Gujarats Bharuch district. The police also found the cover of a SIM card,recharge voucher coupon of Singtel,a Singapore-based telecom company,a calendar from Indonesia,an empty water bottle and a trouser. The boats engine is missing and some parts are broken. Police suspect it to be be a life saving boat that got detached from a ship.

HC to ASI: Check if Tagore paintings real

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Monday directed the ASI to test the paintings by Rabindranath Tagore that have been claimed as fake. Twenty paintings were handed over to the Indian Museum on March 14,in keeping with an order passed by the HC on March 11. Tapash Sarkar,a sculptor,filed a PIL in the HC in early March,alleging that the 20 paintings by Tagore displayed at an exhibition to mark his 150th birth anniversary of Tagore from February 23 to March 8 were fake.

Samson to be new censor board chief

NEW DELHI: Noted Bharatnatyam dancer Leela Samson will Sharmila Tagore as the next chief of the film censor board,an I&B Ministry official said on Monday,adding the announcement will be made soon. Tagores tenure ends on March 31. Samson is also the chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
