Padma Shri Lalji Singh is new BHU Vice-Chancellor

LUCKNOW: Lalji Singh,an eminent scientist,molecular biologist and former director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology,Hyderabad,has been appointed as the 25th Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. He will take over charge on Monday from outgoing V-C D P Singh.

Lalji Singh,who is an alumnus of BHU,is best known for his contribution to development of DNA fingerprinting techniques in the country. His research work proving that the Aryan and Dravidian races in India had the same genetic basis was published in Nature in 2009 and has been widely acclaimed in the scientific community. He is a Padma Shri and a Bhatnagar Fellow of CSIR.

Noted historian R S Sharma dead

PATNA: Noted historian Ram Sharan Sharma died here on Saturday night after a prolonged fight with respiratory complications. He was 91. He is survived by his wife and a son. He was cremated with state honours on Sunday. Having authored more than 100 books,Sharma was known for his seminal works on Vedas and Puranas. Besides Patna University,he also taught at Delhi University for almost three decades.

Lightning claims 4 jumbos in TN

THENI: Four elephants,including two calves,were struck dead by lightning in Keralas Periyar Reserve Forests,a top forest official said on Sunday. Joint Director of Forest Sanjeev Kumar told PTI that the pachyderms comprised a family a tusker and a female and two claves a male and a female. The elephants were found dead on Saturday evening in Kochu Pamba with their knees down in sitting posture,he said,adding that the tusks were intact,though part of their carcasses were charred.

PSI ends life in police academy

JAMMU: A 25-YEAR-OLD probationary sub-inspector (PSI) allegedly committed suicide on Sunday by hanging herself from the ceiling in her room at Sher-i-Kashmir Police Academy,Udhampur. PSI Parmeek Kour of Gadigarh had been in the academy for the past six months for a year-long training,the police said. The police have sent the body for post-mortem.
