Farmer burnt alive in Bihar village

BHABUA: A farmer was set ablaze by members of a particular caste over a land dispute in Kaimur district,police said on Wednesday. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the farmer,Bhanu Dubey,was overseeing the irrigation work in his field in Sapnitia village,the police said. Dubey was caught hold by some members of a particular caste who tied him to a cot and set afire,killing him on the spot.

West Bengal Power Minister dead

KOLKATA: West Bengal Power minister Mrinal Banerjee passed away on Wednesday at a

hospital here after battling cancer. He was 72 and is survived by his wife. Banerjee breathed his last at 12.55 pm,family sources said. Banerjee also held the Labour portfolio concurrently till last year. Banerjee was elected from the Durgapur-II assembly constituency in the state.

Rajiv Satav is new Youth Congress chief

New Delhi: Maharashtra Youth Congress president Rajiv Satav replaced Ashok Tanwar as Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president on Wednesday. Satav,son of former minister Rajni Satav,was elected to the Assembly from Kalamnuri constituency in the last elections. IYC leaders said Sirsa MP Tanwar had completed five years on the post and had,therefore,requested AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s permission to step down.

NSCN-backed outfit neutralised: Police

SHILLONG: A new Meghalaya militant outfit -Hynniewrtrep Liberation Front (HLF) – backed by the NSCN-IM,has been neutralised at the nascent stage,a senior police officer claimed. “We have netted five key members of the new group,including the c-in-c and chairman. I think we have picked up almost all of them,” SP (Shillong city) Claudia Lyngwa said on Tuesday.

Sohrabuddin case: CBI team in Gujarat

GANDHINAGAR: A team from the CBI Mumbai,which has registered a case against Gujarat Police officials in connection with the alleged fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and disappearance of his wife Kausarbi in 2005,on Wednesday arrived here for probing the case. “We had registered an FIR in the fake encounter case on February 1 at the special crime branch of CBI in Mumbai,” Head of CBI Mumbai (Zone II) P Kandaswamy,said.

No ragging behind suicide: Pune panel

PUNE: The committee appointed by Deccan Education Society’s (DES) Fergusson Law College to look into the allegations of ragging of a student,who committed suicide on January 25,has concluded that there was no such incident. Even as college authorities submitted their report to Vice-Chancellor of Pune University and Maharashtra government’s higher education department denying charges of ragging levelled by parents of the student,Prashant Chitlkar,the police said the probe would continue.

S-I killed,constable hurt in freak firing

GAMARIAH: A CISF Sub-Inspector and bodyguard of former MP Suman Mahto was killed and a constable injured in an accidental firing at Gamariah in Saraikela-Kharswan district on Wednesday,police said. R C Yadav was cleaning his gun when it went off accidentally killing him and injuring Rajnikant.
