Five labourers killed in Mumbai lift collapse
MUMBAI: Five labourers were killed and one seriously injured when a temporary lift collapsed at an under-construction building here on Sunday morning,the police said. The makeshift lift at Rustomjee Towers in suburban Matunga collapsed around 9.30 am. A total of six labourers were in the lift and were coming down when the wire snapped and the lift crashed. Four were killed on the spot,two were rushed to government-run Sion Hospital. One of them succumbed to injuries while another is still battling
Ex-CJI kin: Kerala Bar seeks probe
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Bar Council on Sunday passed a resolution seeking comprehensive probe into the allegations against the family of former CJI K G Balakrishnan. The issue was discussed and unanimously passed as an out of the agenda item in a routine meeting of the council. Council chairman K Jayarajan said the allegations of wealth amassment by the family of Balakrishnan have evoked anxiety among the public and the Bar about the judiciary. The situation demands the intervention of the President of India.
Man kills sister,her lover for honour
BATHINDA: In a suspected case of honour killing in Bathinda,a man murdered his sister and the man she had eloped with nearly 10 months ago. Santosh has been on the run since the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday when he allegedly stabbed to death his sister Anju and her lover Tony,both in their mid-twenties. Bathinda SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said it was not immediately known whether Anju had come to her parents house for the first time after she eloped with Tony,a resident of the same locality. A couple of years ago,Anju was married to one Raju,who was later sent to jail for allegedly killing Anjus mother. With Raju in jail,Anju and Tony developed intimacy.
Worship at Dhaka temple stopped
DHAKA: Hindus in Bangladesh are in shock following the suspension of worship at the capitals Dhakeshwari Temple,the most important place of worship for the minority community in the country,after a theft on Sunday,the private bdnews24 online reported. Gold and silver ornaments and taka 4.5 lakh have been stolen from the temple,said Tapan Bhattacharya,the in-charge of the state-owned Dhakeshwari Temple.
Arunachal: Forest official abducted
ITANAGAR: A forest official in Arunachal Pradeshs Tirap district was on Sunday abducted by unidentified persons,the police said. Chanye Akhang,a forest officer at Kanubari,was abducted by heavily armed miscreants from his residence in NTC Colony on Saturday evening. The police have registered a case at the Deomali police station and have launched an investigation,SP of Tirap district Vikramjit Singh said.
Injured tusker falls from hilltop,dies
DEHRADUN: A tusker,seriously injured in a fight with another male elephant in the jungles of Rajaji Park on January 6,died after falling from a hilltop,officials said on Sunday. The elephant was undergoing treatment and was showing signs of improvement. However,Tipu,aged 45 years,fell from a hilltop in Motichur range while walking on Saturday night and died instantly.
