VHP leader held for wifes murder

BHOPAL: The Gwalior district chief of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing his wife and dumping her body outside the house of a builder. Investigating Officer S S Parmar told The Indian Express that Navneet Guptas wife had found out that he was having an affair with a woman whom he wanted to marry. Gupta,37,tried to implicate builder Charu Jain in the case,Parmar added.

Kanpur rape: School owners son charged

KANPUR: Crime Branch-CID on Wednesday filed a chargesheet against Piyush Verma in the case of sexual assault and murder of Bharti Gyan Sthali School student Divya Singh. The chargesheet was filed in the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate. Piyush is the son of the schools owner. The accused has been charged with offences including murder,intercourse against the order of nature and rape of a minor.

NEW DELHI: The National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) has been reconstituted with former Indian ambassador to the US Naresh Chandra as the head of the panel. The NSAB comprises former foreign secretary and special envoy to PM Shyam Saran,eminent nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar,The Indian Expresss Strategic Affairs editor Dr C Rajamohan,Centre for Policy Research chief Pratap Bhanu Mehta,former Navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash,former Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi amongst others.

Tehelka gets IPI award

NEW DELHI: The International Press Institute (IPI),India Chapter,on Wednesday conferred their Excellence in Journalism award for the year 2010 to Tehelka. The award was given to the magazine for the expose on the cold-blooded killing of a young man by the security forces in Manipur. Accepting the award,Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal said the responsibility of reporting the truth rests with the media in these contesting times.

Mirchpur: Khap threatens blockade

CHANDIGARH: The Khap Mahapanchayat on Wednesday threatened a road and rail blockade if Haryana sent Jats jailed for burning to death a disabled Dalit woman and her father in Hisars Mirchpur village to a jail in Delhi.It also demanded immediate release of all the accused. The blockade will start from January 15,said the Mahapanchayat. The court in Rohini,Delhi,where the 98 accused are to be tried,is slated to hear the case on January 14.

Orissa Police killtwo Maoists

BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Police killed two Maoists during an operation in Keonjhar. SP Ashis Kumar Singh said a team of district voluntary force police as well as Special Operations Group police raided the rebel camp at Balipadar reserve forest area in Daitari area of Keonjhar Tuesday night and killed Sadhu Munda alias Sanyas Pallaya,second-in-command in Kalinga Nagar Division of CPI(Maoist),and Raju Munda. In the past 11 days,the Orissa Police claim to have killed 16 rebels.
