Three elephants killed in Orissa
Bhubaneswar: Two elephants got electrocuted by 11 KV electric wires and another tusker was killed by poachers on Wednesday. Early morning,two female elephants were electrocuted in Telkoi range of mineral-rich Keonjhar district when they brushed against an electric pole following which a 11 KV wire snapped and fell on them. Local forest officials said the head of one of the elephants was burnt. In another incident,a tusker was killed by poachers in Banei sub-division of Sundargarh. The poachers cut off the tusks of the elephant after killing it.
Flag unfurled upside down in Aurangabad
Aurangabad: The national flag was unfurled upside down at the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) campus on the occasion of the Republic Day on Wednesday leading to the suspension of three civic employees. The flag was hoisted by Mayor Anita Ghodele. A case was also registered with the police. Deepak Kharat,Arvind Kulkarni and Vasant Patil were suspended by AMC Deputy Commissioner Vasant Nikam,sources said.
Padma Shri for Andaman nurse
Port Blair: For distinguished services in health sector,Shanti Teresa Lakra,an auxiliary nurse midwife attached to the tribal health section of the directorate of health services in the Andaman and Nicobar islands,has been conferred this years Padma Shri award. She joined the department in 2001 and was posted at sub-centre in Dugong in little Andaman,where she performed all medical and health care services for the Onge tribe in settlement colony.
Tigress found dead in Corbett Park
Nainital: A 3-year-old tigress was found dead by the forests guards in the Kalagad Range of Corbett National Park,officials said here on Wednesday. Porcupine quills had pierced the animals chest and elephants footprint were found at the spot,they said. The carcass has been sent for postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of the death.
Puducherry: 65 ill due to chlorine gas leak
Puducherry: Around 65 people,including 12 children,were taken ill after chlorine gas leaked from a nearby chemical factory here,police said on Wednesday. The victims who complained of respiratory problems and eye irritation after inhaling the gas,had been admitted to hospital where their condition was stated to be stable. Police said the leak of chlorine from a cylinder stored in the factory at Pudhu Nagar locality had been plugged.
3-yr-old dies,wall collapse toll 2
Muzaffarnagar: A 3-year-old girl on Wednesday succumbed to injuries after a wall collapsed in Kidwai Nagar area here,taking the toll in the incident to two,police said. Fiza Zaidi died in a local hospital,where she was admitted on Tuesday after a wall of the balcony of Imamwada collapsed,killing a four-year-old girl.
Gram pradhan shot dead in UP
Muzaffarnagar: A newly-elected gram pradhan was shot dead by some unidentified persons at Bahawri village in the district,police said on Wednesday. According to the police,Brijender Kumar was shot dead on Tuesday when he was returning from a marriage ceremony in Shamli village. Some unidentified persons intercepted his car and opened fire. Kumar died on the spot while another person accompanying him sustained serious injuries. Election enmity is suspected to be the reason behind the murder,police said.
