Nitish faces dissent again
Buxar: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar faced protest for the second day on Thursday during his Seva Yatra in Buxar district. Several girl students and ABVP activists shouted anti-government slogans when the CM was holding an official junta darbar. They were however,pacified by policemen and officials.
ALLAHABAD: The explosion that killed five slum children in Kareli area on Wednesday was caused when some children found a metallic object and tried to dismantle it,police said on Thursday,terming it an accident. Allahabad SSP Naveen Arora dismissed the locals’ allegation that Mohammad Asif alias Ranu Gotwala,who had threatened them to vacate the slum,was behind the blast.
2 most wanted Naxals held in UP
LUCKNOW: In an early morning operation on Thursday,the Sonbhadra police arrested a most wanted Naxal zonal commander,Munna Vishwakarma,and his associate,Ajit Kol,from Kanach Kanuara forest in Chopan area of the district,close to Bihar. Munna carried a reward of Rs 2 lakh from Uttar Pradesh and Rs 1 lakh from Bihar. Kol carried Rs 50,000 on his head from the UP police.
Poachers kill rhino in Manas
Guwahati: Less than a year after the UNESCO removed the in-danger tag from Manas National Park in Assam,unidentified poachers have killed a rhinoceros here and decamped with its horn. The animal was shot dead around 5.30 am on Wednesday. Translocated from Kaziranga in February,the female rhino was killed despite having been radio-collared and monitored on a regular basis.
Witchcraft: Dalit woman killed in Gaya
PATNA: A Dalit woman was allegedly killed by her neighbour for practising witchcraft. The police said the incident took place on Wednesday when Laiki Bhuiyan (58) of Chotki Kewla village near Gaya,was first allegedly beaten up by accused Kapil Bhuiyan for casting bad influence on his family with her witchcraft,and later strangled. The police said they were investigating the case.
Plea in HC against sale of land to Ghai
CHANDIGARH: A resident of Bhadsa village in Jhajjar moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the Haryana government on Thursday,terming as illegal and unconstitutional the sale of over 20 acres of panchayat land in Jhajjar to film director Subhash Ghai for his film institute. The petition will come up for hearing next week.
IAF signs Rs 2,800-cr Pilatus deal
New Delhi: The Indian Air Forces long pending requirement of basic trainer aircraft can now be met with the acquisition of 75 Pilatus planes starting later this year under a Rs 2,800 crore deal signed on Thursday with the Swiss company. The aircraft will help the IAF replace its fleet of HPT-32 basic trainer aircraft grounded since a fatal air crash in 2009.

LUCKNOW: Giving in to pressure from Syed Ahmed Bukhari,the Shahi Imam of Delhis Jama Masjid,the Samajwadi Party government has appointed Waseem Ahmed Khan as Chairman of UP Pollution Control Board. No one in SP knows much about Khan,except that he is from Meerut,now lives in Noida and is believed to be in the meat business. Bukhari confirmed that he was behind the appointment. I found him to be genuine. I recommended his name. I will recommend more such names of Muslims, he said.
Cong leadership not consulted
NEW DELHI: The Congress leadership is said to be upset for not being consulted over the petrol price hike,but the party is not inclined to put any pressure on the government for any rollback. Congress president Sonia Gandhi was learnt to have been informed about the decision of the oil companies on Wednesday evening only,said party sources. Instead of resorting to such a steep hike in one go,it could have been calibrated over some weeks. Had the party leadership been consulted in advance,we could have at least created an atmosphere for the people to take a sympathetic and rational view about this hike, a senior leader told The Indian Express.
