BAGHDAD: US troops who thought they were under attack killed an Iraqi airport employee Sunday as he drove near a military convoy on his way to work,officials said. The driver,identified as Baghdad International Airport worker Karim Obaid Bardan,failed to heed repeated signals to slow down or turn on his headlights as he neared the military convoy,said US and Iraqi security officials.

Abida Parveen has heart surgery

LAHORE: Sufi singer Abida Parveen had an emergency heart surgery Sunday in Lahore,a doctor said. Parveen was admitted to the Doctors Hospital on Saturday after complaining of chest pain. “It turned out she had suffered a myocardial infarction or heart attack. We performed an angioplasty on her artery to remove a block and installed a stent,” Muhammad Sarwar,chief executive of Doctors Hospital,said. “She is out of danger,” he said.

Fire at Oregon Islamic Centre

CORVALLIS: Authorities said a fire had been reported at an Islamic centre near Oregon State University in Corvallis on Sunday. No injuries were reported. Authorities said they are investigating the fire at the Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center. The fire was contained to one room. The fire erupted two days after Somali-born teenager Mohamed Osman Mohamud was arrested and charged with attempting to blow up a van that he believed was loaded with explosives.

Zardari holds talks with Rajapaksa

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka and Pakistan Sunday inked key agreements to boost bilateral relationship as President Asif Ali Zardari met his counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa in the capital. Zardari,who is the first head of state to undertake a four-day visit to Sri Lanka after Rajapaksa began his second term,aims to boost bilateral cooperation. It was learnt that four agreements were signed during the meeting.

Ahead of Olympics,Rio police fight gangs

RIO DE JANEIRO: Rio police said they have taken control of a complex long held by traffickers after invading it backed by helicopters and armoured vehicles. The operation hopes to make the city safe for the 2016 Olympics. The head of Rio state’s military police said they encountered less resistance than expected and claimed victory over hundreds of armed gang members who were trapped in the Alemao slum complex. Officers on the ground were saying they had not completely taken over.
