One killed in German school attack

BERLIN: One person has been killed in an attack at a vocational school in the southwestern German city of Ludwigshafen,a police spokesman in the town said on Thursday. He also said a 23-year-old male suspect had been arrested and it was unclear if other people had been injured. Another spokesman told Germanys N-TV television that an armed male had attacked a teacher but that the school was no longer under threat.

AMSTERDAM: Top UN climate change official Yvo de Boer said on Thursday that he was resigning after nearly four years,a period when governments struggled without success to agree on a new global warming deal. His departure takes effect July 1,five months before 193 nations are due to reconvene in Mexico for another attempt to reach a binding worldwide accord on controlling greenhouse gases. He denied that his decision to quit was a result of frustration with Copenhagen.

Avalanche leaves 50 dead or missing in Pak

ISLAMABAD: An avalanche crashed down on a village in northwestern Pakistan,burying houses and leaving more than 50 people dead or missing,officials said on Thursday. Rescuer teams digging into the snow and rubble almost a full day after Wednesday nights avalanche had recovered 38 bodies and had little hope that 14 people still missing would be found alive,the local government told Dunya television.

Lanka court releases 14 Fonseka men

COLOMBO: In a setback to the Sri Lankan government,a court here has ordered the release of 14 supporters of Sarath Fonseka picked up from his election office,after a top investigative agency conceded it had no evidence against them. The CID told the court there was no evidence to justify their detention any longer and said they had no objection to them being discharged,reports said.

Falklands oil drill to go ahead as planned

LONDON: An oil drilling project in the Falkland Islands will go ahead as planned despite a move by Argentina aimed at restricting access in the area. Argentina,which claims sovereignty over the British-ruled islands,said on Tuesday that boats sailing from its ports to the Falklands would need a permit,deepening a long-running row over exploration in the disputed archipelago.
