South Sudan eyes landslide to secede
JUBA: Organisers of south Sudan’s landmark independence vote were collating the remaining preliminary results on Thursday,poised to return a landslide for secession after reaching the simple majority required on just 60 per cent of the ballot. Final results,which will set the mainly Christian,African south on the road to recognition as the worlds newest nation in July,are not expected until next month,but figures gathered from state and county referendum officials around the south showed that 2,224,857 votes for separation from the mainly Muslim,Arab north had already been returned by Wednesday evening.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday dismissed reports that Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Muhammad Omar was treated in a Karachi hospital with the help of ISI after a heart attack. This is the same hackneyed speculation with no substance whatsoever, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit,reacting to the reports. An unnamed senior Taliban commander was quoted as saying,Within our movement,we have experts for every field and there is no need to shift our leader to a hospital in Karachi for treatment.

KARACHI: The four men imprisoned for killing Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl were not present during his beheading but were convicted of murder because Pakistani authorities relied on perjured testimony and ignored other leads,says a report released Thursday,by a team of journalists and students carrying out an investigation spanning over three years.
Man hangs self after dogs death
London: A British dog lover has taken his own life after having to have his pet put down by a vet,a media report said. According to The Sun,44-year-old Steven Anderson of Wickersley,Rotherham,was found hanging from a tree with the body of his seven-year-old pet dog Collie Beaky packed into a suitcase nearby.
